The Holy Spirit’s Work in Moving us Past Jealousy

It’s not fair! The children (and adults, too) cry out in jealousy. We see unfairness directed at ourselves—but our vision isn’t as clear when our thoughts turn to others. The Israelites in our lesson were full of discontent. “It isn’t fair, we’re thirsty!” God gives water from a rock. Hungry? Manna from heaven. We miss meat? God sends quail. Moses is ready to throw in the towel. God sent help again, asking Moses to select 70 men. And, to those 70, the Spirit comes down. God shows grace and mercy! He places the Spirit upon them and sends them out to speak. . . . Likewise, God sends the Holy Spirit to his apostles on Pentecost . . . and pours out His goodness on all His followers. His Grace is more than we deserve. We celebrate God’s gracious unfairness! Even though we are sinners, we receive His grace and mercy through faith in Christ Jesus, our Savior.
