16th Sunday of Pentecost

When Jesus’ cross reveals the true enormity both of our debt and of God’s boundless mercy our stone-cold hearts are transformed into living, loving hearts overflowing with thanksgiving, generosity, and praise. 

1. Jesus’ cross reveals the true nature of our debt to God

a. Something we could never do with our own wealth or ability 

b. Something only the perfect God-Man would do for us 

2. Jesus’ cross transforms our relationships with God and our neighbors

a. Behold the servant of the Lord – be it done according to Your Word 

b. Not enabling, but genuine compassion, concern, and generosity 

3. Jesus’ cross reveals both the judgment and the mercy of God

a. God’s anger remains on those who refuse His Son 

b. Humble, broken, contrite hearts overflow with thanksgiving / praise
